The smell of machine oil mingles with coffee and the faint dust of sanding. A band saw hums; two apprentices argue quietly over the best way to mill a corroded hinge into a new component. At the centre of it all is Sarah McLeod, hands perpetually marked by soot, sleeves rolled, and a clipboard tucked under her arm as if that small rectangle contains the towns future.

McLeod did not set out to be a romantic figure in Brandons downtown revival. She grew up on the edge of town, the daughter of a lineman and an elementary school librarian, and left for engineering school in Winnipeg with plans to build things that lasted. After a decade in larger shops and a brief stint in a tech incubator, she came back in 2015 when her father fell ill and she found herself looking at the same empty storefronts that had marked her childhood walks into town.

"I wanted the machinery around me to mean something to the people here," she told me over lunch in the café attached to the workshop. "It seemed wrong that we were the kind of place where the future always happened somewhere else."

That impulse became Prairie Foundry, a hybrid maker space and small-scale manufacturer that has quietly reoriented parts of Brandons economy. McLeod leased an aging brick building from the citys downtown revitalization arm and spent months renovating it with a crew of neighbours and volunteers. What she rebuilt was not only a shop but a ladder: shop classes for teens, an apprenticeship program for people leaving corrections and recovery programs, and a contract shop that manufactures modular components for local builders and weather-hardened sensor housings for regional farms.

The list of concrete impacts is less flashy than it sounds but no less important. Prairie Foundry has created more than three dozen jobs across skilled and entry-level positions, placed apprentices into long-term employment with Brandon trades firms, and kept several mid-sized projects—small housing retrofits, farm equipment repairs, furniture restoration—within the community rather than outsourcing them to Winnipeg or Regina. Partnerships with Brandon University and Assiniboine Community College have produced co-op placements and short technical certificates taught right in the workshops front room.

One of the more surprising ripples is not in employment at all but in how services are delivered. Local hog and grain farmers approached the Foundry with a practical problem: expensive, delicate sensors used for precision agriculture were failing in the prairie wind and temperature swings. McLeods team designed a rugged housing and a simple mounting system that could be locally produced and repaired. "Its not glamorous," said Marco Beltran, a third-generation farmer from just outside Brandon, "but it saved us thousands in downtime and shipping. When something breaks, Sarahs team gets it fixed the next day. That kind of reliability changes how small farms plan."

For the apprentices, the Foundry has become a turning point. "I was in and out of jobs for years," said Lena Whitecloud, who joined the program after finishing a restorative justice initiative. "Here, people invested time in teaching me how to read the plans, how to keep a schedule, and how to stand up for my work. My mom still comes by to see the stuff Ive made. Thats everything."

McLeods approach is deliberately incremental. Rather than chasing scale or flashy contracts, she opts for projects that knit the local economy tighter: a conservatory of craft for the restaurant that needed a custom hood, a run of modular frames for a low-cost housing pilot, a collaboration with a nonprofit to repurpose abandoned storefront glass into community greenhouses. The cumulative effect has been to change expectations about what downtown Brandon can supply and whom it employs.

The future she imagines is pragmatic and quietly ambitious. Prairie Foundry is plotting a satellite workshop in a smaller Westman community to reduce transportation barriers for apprentices and to seed local repair economies. It is also experimenting with low-carbon production techniques and sourcing more reclaimed materials to lower costs and environmental impact. "Our ambition is not to be the biggest manufacturer," McLeod says, "but to be the easiest place to get things fixed, made, and learned in this region."

What has sustained the project through lean patches—small municipal grants, a winter of barely covering payroll, the difficulty of finding skilled welders—has been something harder to quantify: a shift in civic imagination. In conversations around the bar, in university classes, and at City Hall, stories about what a small, pragmatic workshop can do have multiplied. Those stories change investment decisions; they convince a neighbourhood association to support zoning that lets a small factory open; they convince a teenager to take a trades class.

The scale of Prairie Foundrys achievements is modest if you measure by revenue or national headlines. But measuring regional development by the things people can point to—pay stubs, repaired equipment, a neighbour working steady hours—reveals a different metric of success, one rooted in resilience. In a region that has long navigated boom-and-bust cycles, McLeods work feels like a new kind of steadiness: an insistence that making, teaching, and repairing can anchor a community as surely as any headline-grabbing factory.

Outside the workshop, the air is already warming toward spring. Students carry cut plywood past the café window. McLeod walks the floor, stops to test a fixture, and smiles at an apprentices careful measurement. "If we can keep making places where people can learn and make a living," she says, "then Westman wont be a place that people only remember fondly. It will be a place they choose to stay in."
